Iterative development to the rescue!
Every software methodology out there now gives lip service to some form of iterative process. Unfortunately, it usually seems to be "bolted on" and not "built-in".
You must restructure your team and your processes to be truly iterative and incremental.
- Time-boxing forces you to make tough decisions and to deliver
- Scope management is not something to tackle when you're in trouble - it has to be intrinsic in the everyday decisions of the entire team
- You must always be working on something the customer will recognize as having value
But, old habits die hard!
Those of us who
- Were brought up with the waterfall concept
- Think we know better than the silly customer
- Are sure that only we really know what will be needed
- Get a rush out of abstract, arcane concepts...
- Who regularly talk of architecture with a glint in our eyes quickly fall back into linear thinking that stifles creativity and bogs down productivity.
Lets face it! Architecture is being commoditized! Most projects now can re-use existing architectures and standard frameworks to do what used to take an army of analysts to reinvent for each project.
The value-add is not in inventing a new software architecture. It is in delivering great quality, working software to the customer as soon as possible!
