ProjectCards on Linux
ProjectCards is built on Linux-friendly technology
The variety of Linux distributions and desktop choices makes it a little more
difficult to supply a simple installer, so you must be ready to adapt the
following instructions to your particular installation. We will greatly
appreciate any tips you can give us to improve this page and the
installation process.
Installing the server
We have used the server code on Tomcat 4.1 installations on RedHat as well
as on Debian Linux.
Our most recent installation was on a Pentium 120 running Debian 2.4.27-1-386.
We figured that if it can work on an old machine like this, it could run anywhere!
- You need to have Java and Tomcat installed and running. We installed:
- Make sure your Tomcat is functional by accessing the default Tomcat welcome page.
- Download and configure the projectcards.xml
context file. Please indicate where to store the ProjectCards data files.
Note: The user running Tomcat must have write access to the data path.
- Download the web application archive projectcards.war
and install it under Tomcat's webapps directory, along with the projectcards.xml file. Be careful:
your browser might try to download this file as "projectcards.zip". Make sure to rename it to
"projectcards.war".
- Download the following zip file which contains common libraries required by ProjectCards.
Tomcat-lib.zip
Unzip the file to the Tomcat home directory. The file should be located as:
{tomcat_home}/common/lib/activation.jar
{tomcat_home}/common/lib/mail.jar
{tomcat_home}/common/endorsed/xercesImpl.jar
{tomcat_home}/common/endorsed/xmlParserAPIs.jar
- If Tomcat is configured to load new web applications automatically, it should pick it up
and load it in a short while. Otherwise, you have to restart Tomcat.
- Test the ProjectCards web services by accessing the "/projectcards/ProjectProvider?WSDL" page.
You should see the WSDL file for our web services.
- It is also possible to configure Apache to redirect requests from the standard HTTP port to Tomcat.
For more information, see the JK2 connector documentation
Installing the client
The ProjectCard client user interface runs with GTK.
- You need a Java Runtime Environment. We are using version 1.4.2_13-b06.
- Download and install the projectcards-client-2.2.2.tar.gz
program file.
- To run ProjectCards using GTK, run ./projectcards-gtk.sh.
- You may need to adjust the path to the java executable in the scripts, as it simply calls "java" with no path information.
